Pilot Program - Removal of Trash Cans from Classrooms
In an effort to increase recycling rates and improve collection efficiency across campus, the Waste Reduction and Recycling Office in collaboration with Building Services, has developed a pilot program to remove trash cans from the classrooms. Adequate recycling and trash collection containers will be placed throughout the hallways in each building for convenience. It will be the responsibility of the classroom occupant to take their recycling and trash and place it in the proper container in the hallway when they leave.
The first three buildings to be identified as part of this pilot program are the new College of Education, Duncan Hall, and CAP Science. There will be signage displayed as a reminder in these areas. We appreciate the cooperation of the campus community as we move forward with this exciting endeavor.
There are several benefits to this program. As mentioned earlier, it will increase our recycling rates and will improve our efficiency with collection of waste and recycling. It has also been shown that this type of program will actually cut down on litter left behind in classrooms. During these tough economic times, we will be able to cut down on expenses associated with the costs of trash bags. This initiative will give our campus community members more responsibility for the waste we produce, as well as opening our eyes to our consumption. From here we can begin to develop ways to reduce our consumption. When we think of the three Rs: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, we must remember that we need to first reduce waste in order to be good stewards of the planet.
